MASTER'S OF SCIENCE GRADUATE PROGRAM: Advanced Experimental and Computational Biosciences

Από ΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΕΙΑ ΤΜΗΜΑΤΟΣ: Ελ. Αθανασιάδη

The Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the University of Thessaly invites interested parties to apply to attend the Master's Graduate Program "Advanced Experimental and Computational Biosciences" for the academic year 2024-2025.

The main focus of the program is the in-depth study of advanced approaches in biochemistry, molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics, and their applications in health, agri-food, and the environment. Our vision is to advance scientific excellence in life sciences and to foster a strong and dynamic culture of collaboration, supporting risk-taking and interdisciplinary research toward breakthrough discoveries. The program provides high-level practical training in the life sciences, develops candidates' research skills, and prepares them for entering a PhD program or as staff of research centres.

All holders of biosciences-related Bachelor's programs (e.g. biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, molecular biology, genetics, but also medical schools) are eligible to apply. Good knowledge of English is a prerequisite for applying. For applicants whose mother tongue is not English, at least a B2 level degree and good command of the language during the interview are required.

Evaluation of applicants is based on the following criteria:

Overall Bachelor's degree grade

Grades in undergraduate courses relevant to experimental and/or computational biosciences Experimental/computational undergraduate thesis Relevant publications, announcements in conferences Other relevant graduate degrees Relevant research activity Recommendation letters • Good knowledge of English

Interview: The interview is an essential part of the selection procedure, the purpose of which is to assess whether the candidate is capable of critically using basic biological information in order to address specific research-related problems. The interview is oral and in English. Interviews include questions on biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, and genetics, as well as questions on subjects of wider scientific interest that aim to:

• determine whether the supporting documents reflect the general training of the applicant

ascertain any special needs of the candidate (depending on the previous studies) in the event that he / she will be accepted

The application file must include the following supporting documents:

  1. Written application (available on the website)
  2. Curriculum Vitae with information on studies, research, and professional activity
  3. A copy of a diploma, degree, or certificate that they are expected to graduate
  4. Copy of detailed course score
  5. Proof of English language proficiency
  6. At least two Letters of Recommendation (from academic, researchers or prominent personalities).

The letters will be sent directly by the recommenders themselves via email to askotidas[at]uth[dot]gr, or by post from the candidate in a sealed envelope.

The above supporting documents should be sent electronically to askotidas[at]uth[dot]gr by completing the special form found on our website: https://aec.bio.uth.gr/application-form

Important note: Undergraduate students can also apply if in their final year of study. They can be admitted on the condition that they complete their studies before the commencement of classes.

The tuition fee for the MSc is 4,000€ (2,000€ per academic year). Postgraduate studies commence in the fall semester. The duration of studies is four semesters. The number of postgraduate students annually admitted to the program is set at a maximum of twenty-six (26).

Applications for admissions may be submitted until positions are filled, or no later than June 1,2024.
